Full Version: Tis 2008: Parental Control Starts To Block Every Page After A Few Days

I'm using TIS 2008 with Parental control turned on, Heuristic protection set to Child and content filtering on, and all works fine to begin with.

I get asked about putting urls into the whitelist and adult pages appear to be blocked.

After a few days of use though, BD seems to start blocking EVERY page I try and visit. To resolve the issue I have to uninstall and reinstall the app. Then the above cycle repeats.

Is there any obvious reason for this on XP SP3?

Also, it is a pain having to re-enter all the banned keywords into content filter and re-added all the pages into the whitelist. Is there a way to export these settings so they can be re-imported?

I am quite fed up with this app, as it stands the software clearly doesn't work and I will have to abonden it for something else - unless Im doing something stupid

Any help? (in this forum?)

Thanks biggrin.gif

Unfortunately I can't be of much help. I too am having similar frustrations with the heuristic filter. But it does not get worse over time for me. What I do is go through all my current bookmarks to find the ones it blocks. Then say yes to add them to the white list then go into the white list and strip them down to the simplest web address and surround them with * wild cards. It blocked many websites that have our local cities name in. So I simply added the name with wild cards around it and now they all open fine. I have mine set to teenager and even at that setting it blocks tons of ok sites. It even blocked "christianbooks.com" and our local library's website. And once when I was navigating through Bitdefenders website it blocked one of their pages. And on top of it I've uninstalled and reinstalled so many times to try to fix other issues, I end up retyping everything back in the white list over and over. The text is located in this file "pcrules.xml". I always make a copy of it before I uninstall/reinstall, then open it in notepad, edit it down, then print it. But yes manually retyping it in gets real old. Bitdefender should work hard at making this application more usable. In it's current form is seems to do a good job at blocking the bad stuff. Unfortunately it is really good at blocking the good stuff as well.

Thanks for the reply biggrin.gif Was begining to feel abandoned by BD

Does the pcrules file also contain a list of the blocked words as well? To be honest, I am using OpenDNS for the URL blocking (does a much better job) and am using BD for AV, firewall and content blocking - i.e. didgy words hehe

Glad it's not just me having similar problems

I believe it does. Open it in notepad to check it out. I've tried to maintain it or copy my saved one over it after installs but it will not let me. As it shouldn't to remain secure. But it is fully readable. Shouldn't these be in a format that wouldn't allow people to read them? And maybe figure out a way to edit them.
icr
use teenage filter as in child filter u cannot open even google

I just did another uninstall and reinstall of IS2009 (the 6th time) in an effort to see if I could get it to work properly (and it didn't). But I tried a little experiment. I made a copy of the pcrules file before the uninstall. After reinstall I started in safe mode and it let me copy the pcrules file over the existing one. So now I have my extensive white list back without having to manually reenter it. Unfortunately I proved just how not secure the parental controls are. Any kid with a little computer savvy can get into these files in safe mode and make changes to them. Any comments from you Bitdefender experts out there?
