Full Version: Firewall Profiles Problem

Greets!

Every time I make some change to my network connection settings (or as was the case today, after I reboot) my firewall profile renames itself to something like "Default untrusted 247" and all of my program permissions disappear and I have to start over (the Traffic tab is just a blank page). I make regular backups of my BitDefender settings, and trying to restore those settings when this problem occurs doesn't work. All of the settings are restored except for the program permissions.

I've tried renaming the new profile to match my old one, hoping it would then revert back to the other settings, but that doesn't work at all.

When I check my BitDefender directory my old profile XML files are still there, and they all contain the data they are supposed to (that is, the program permissions I would expect to find).

Strangely, sometimes when this occurs BitDefender remembers some of my program permissions from the old profile, and allows/denies internet access to these programs accordingly. Other programs that I'd already defined permissions for will cause BitDefender to alert me when they attempt to go online. So, some programs are remembered, and others aren't, but none of them show up in the Traffic tab except newly created ones (i.e. ones created after the problem has occurred).

The only way I've been able to get around this problem is by completely uninstalling the software, including the use of the uninstall tool, and then reinstalling, and then loading in my backed up settings. But this is obviously a lot of unnecessary effort to correct something so small. Is there a simpler way to get around this problem?

Thanks!
Paddy
Can anyone help me with this? I updated my graphics card drivers today and the same problem happened again (I don't know what my GPU has to do with my network). It's really starting to annoy me.

Cheers.

One more time before I give up haha:

How do I load in a previously saved firewall profile when the profile renames itself? I've read the help file cover-to-cover, and I've searched these forums and Google for a solution, but I can't find one. This is a problem that occurs on a somewhat regular basis, so please, can anyone give me a way around this? I tried clicking "Reset Profile", and then loading in my saved settings, but that didn't work either. I've also tried booting into Safe Mode, and then copying and pasting the relevant backed-up settings over the current settings, and that didn't work either.

For the record, I upgraded to the final version of 2009 two days ago (which appears to have abandoned the multiple "firewall profiles" approach, which I obviously approve of!) but it crippled my system/internet connection, resulting in the need to reinstall Windows, so I won't be upgrading again for a few months until I'm sure the software is in better condition.

Thanks.
