Full Version: Bitdefender Vulnerability

AverageJoe
Hi,

I was able to terminate all of Bitdefender's processes and completely shut it down, just thought u guys might want to know...

This is referring to Bitdefender Home 2008 Antivirus, although it may in fact affect all products, haven't tested yet.

I am using a relatively new (I believe) method of process termination...I can either private message you with the details, or just post it here...Either way I would like to give you the option of disclosure before it is fixed.

Niels
Hello AverageJoe,

Posting it here I wouldn't recommend it.

Process termination in windows taskmanager is impossible due the BitDefender selfprotection service. The gui of BitDefender will disappear but the realtime protection will still be active. But feel free to report it by contacting livechat. Or by using my account. This is only a user forum. People from BitDefender aren't always online. But I will move this topic to the bug section.

Kind regards,
Niels

Hello AverageJoe,

You can send me a PM with details, and I'll contact the devs about it.

This issue is very very solved on BItDefender 2009.
You can not kill services, process or exit to BitDefender Tray, you always get a error box.
Goodbye!

Sure, I'll join beta test, how do I sign up? I'd like to test 2009 for the same issues, and others as well.

What i found isn't exactly a vulnerability, just a method..but I let the developers know.
Cris
All information about Beta test are available on this thread: http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=5525

Also, all discussions about the BETA releases have to be posted in the Beta Test area (where the above topic is posted).

There are ways to get around that. I will try a few ways on BD 2009 and PM you Criss if I can shut it down and how I attempted it.

How did you manage to terminate it? I need to know myself....

If you want join on Beta Testing...There is very good prizes, but I have more of 60 Bugs posted and I´m on 6th position, and this Beta testing finish on 26 June...
Goodbye!
Cris
Thanks JGray and AverageJoe for the PMs. I will forward them to whom it is necessary.

However, take into consideration this: there isn't such thing as an absolute self-protection mechanism. Anything and everything can be bypassed one way or the other, so there will always be different methods of killing protected processes.

Cris.

P.S.: @JGray, my name ends with one "s", not with two. wink.gif

Sorry for bringing this back but I just wanted to repond to a couple posts. I forgot about this thread.... long ago obveously.

Eric, I sent you a PM on how it was done. It was a program that I used. I do not want to say the name of the program over the forum for public to see.

I remembered this thread because I just had to manually remove a tough little virus off my family friends computer which disabled BD AV 2008.

Now I didn't check to see if the "processes" were terminated but the virus turned off all of BD's virus scanning options and eliminated the possibility of turning them back on. The only way I was able to get some sort of real time scanning back online was when BD came up with a warning saying the AV scanner was turned off and gave my the option to "Fix It". Once I clicked that I was able to get some scanning options working but I could not configure anything.

Will this be an issue with 2009? For a virus to be able to "turn off" the scanning options? I don't know if a virus has to kill the processes of BD to do so.

I have installed BD 2009 on their comp hoping to eliminate this issue.

BTW, Your Welcome CriS
