Full Version: vsserv.exe crashes caused by bitdifender10

Hi there.

Bitfefender10 has recently started crashing my vsserv.exe files when I try and conect more than one internet page. I can get the first one but any subsequent page causes the vsserve process to disappear. At the moment I am writing with bitdefender10 disabled.

I have several dump files which I have tried to upload. The xml files have worked fine but your forum system won't let me upload the *.tmp.dmp files.

I urgently need advice on what to do.

I recently moved away from Symantec to ditdefender for just these kind of reasons. I'm just a normal user who wants to use my PC to earn a living. I don't wish to become an IT guru as well. That is not how I make my money. I'm beging to wonder if the IT industry has created a Frankestien that's so complex, no one knows how to control it any longer.

Regards,

Steve

What browser do you use? FF, IE Opera? The cause of the crushes could be some invalid libraries, etc.
Jonathan
Hi there,

I am new in this forum. I also have this problem. Always after mine update, it seem that the vsserv.exe crash or in specific the firewall is disable itself. I cant online then. I have to restart again to start back the bitdefender. It keep happening every hour after it update.

What wrong with it? Just start to use bitdefender internet security after my friend recommend it.
AndreiASM
What OS do you use, Jonathan? Windows XP or Windows Vista?
Niels
The problem could be windows vista related or it could be that there are still remaints of Symantec. I suggest that you download this removal tool : http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninsta...oval-Tool.shtml
Take also a look this topic : http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?sho...p;hl=vsserv.exe So normally it must be fixed in one of the next updates.

My BitDefender is up-to-date (it updated 20 minutes ago), and I also have this problem.
BitDefender notifies my that VSSERV needs to close, and I don't have internet after that.

I am using Windows Vista, and when this happens, Virus Shield is also Stopped, when I re-enable that, my BitDefender modules work normal, but there is no Firewall..

Oh, this is happining on a clean Windows Vista install :) (forgot to mention that when I first posted this).

Is this a 'known problem'?

Kind regards,

Thijs

I had one crush today, but, as I sad earlier in another post, this is maybe the 4th or 5th crush I have since I installed BD 10 Plus (about a year ago).
Niels
Hi Thijs

You can manually restart every service that has BitDefender in the name by doing this go to start, run,at the run dialog box type services.msc press enter. Leftclick on the services and choose for restart. Most problems seems only to occur on windows vista.

Niels

Till now I didn't receive any error message from windows that has to do with vsserv.exe

Hello again.

We did not have this problem at all till one day ago. Yesterday. Possibly the day before. I think something somewhere has been modified by automatic update and now there is a problem. If we have invalid libraries - whatever they are (libraries for what? viruses?) - they have become invalid in the past day or so. Something has made them invalid.

We do not use Vista; we have experienced this on two machines - one running XP home and one running XP pro. The XP pro machine seems to suffer the problem more than XP home.

I have turned off all the Symantec processes with no noticeable improvement. Also, I have had 10 or more vserve.exe crashes over the period of two days. Always when using the internet.

Please can you tell us what this problem is and how to fix this it or provide an update solution?

Regards,

Steve
Jonathan
Well I am Using Windows XP... But today after i run the update, it seem the problem have been fix.

Thanks. laugh.gif
Niels
Hi bibblebobble

Have you uninstalled Norton antivirus? Because 2 antiviruses even only a few remaints could cause conflicts. So I suggest that you download the Symantec removal tool. For link see my previous post.
Strange I also have windows xp but the home edition and I don't have any problems with the latest updates. After an update some installation files of BitDefender will be modified. So sometimes something can go wrong. Normally the vsserv.exe problem must be solved in one of the next updates.

Thanks for the reply Niels.
I did restart every BitDefender service, it just crashes again.
I actually uninstalled BitDefender yesterday, because I couldn't work normally at that workstation.

Will install it again, and update it smile.gif

Kind regards,

Thijs

Sorry for double-posting, I couldn't find any "Edit" button on my previous post :\ ..
I do have one @ this post.

I installed BitDefender again, updated it, but the firewall module just fails with the message it cannot initialize.
After that, when I run the updater, it fails to MD5-verify sa2...db
Restarting all BitDefender services will make "System" use 100% CPU.

It's a production machine, so I (more or less) cannot afford this kind of trouble.

Kind regards,

Thijs
Niels
Hi Thijs

I've merged your double-post with your first post.
Try this rightclick on computer, properties, advanced system settings, settings, data execution protection,Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select. Press on the add button, now browse to X:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender10\vsserv.exe (Change x by the letter where you installed vista on) I only posted the path when you don't have changed the path during installation) press on open and after that on ok. You can do that for the process or service that is mentioned. This is only a temporary solution.

I must admit that the cpu load is also 100 % since the latest updates. I also have the same issue. I think the reason is that they are offering fixes for known problems.

Hi,

I'm starting to have vsserv crashes too sad.gif

First time, vsserv crashed just a few days after this issue appeared on this Forum (I think it was another topic). That crash appeared when I had FF open and browsing this Forum. When I clicked Back (I used the Back button on my mouse), vsserv instantly crashed. I didn't report it, cos I thought it was just a simple error (not a permanent bug).

But today, my father had two crashes in 30 minutes. I don't really know what he was doing, but from what he said, he was trying to access www.ziua.ro (both times), when vsserv error appeared.
I'm sure that BitDefender creates some reports to send, but after vsserv crashes, the internet connection doesn't work anymore so nothing can be sent. Can I find those reports somewhere and send them?

Oh, and one more thing: I tried restarting the services, but it didn't work. The only solution was to restart.

That is strange, because when I had the crush yesterday, I was using FF too. I started usingOpera/IE and didn't have any more crushes. If I will experience crushes again, I will post here.
Niels
Hi Cris

Strange I could visit http://www.ziua.ro/ without any problems. I don't know if it's related to some language versions of BitDefender. All problems that people received on this forum didn't occured on my pc.
I also use FF as browser. But I must say that I have BitDefender Antivirus Plus. It could be Internet security suite related.

You can find reports in event viewer: go to start, run,at the run dialog box type eventvwr press enter now open the logbook application. Normally there you will find a reference to the vsserv.exe error you can copy the entire message by pressing on the copy/paste icon. Take also on the follow locations at the root of your hard disc : start,my computer, press on the icon of your hard disc and see if you find logfiles of BitDefender. Take also a look in the installation folder of Softwin (BitDefender) in the subfolder logs.

No problem accessing http://www.ziua.ro/ and no crash. English version of BD here.
Cris
Yeah, when I tried to access that site, I had no problems. As I said, my father way at the PC and I just reported what he said.
It must have been related to some other application he used, but I just have to find it.

Anyway, it's clear that there is a problem, since it happened twice in less then 30 minutes. Maybe it happened when BD was trying to download updates?

Oh, and another question for Niels and khufu: when you accessed www.ziua.ro, did you see anything? When I tried it, I got a blank page in FF (0 bytes), and a Server not found error in IE. So there might be a problem when vsserv scans 0 length files?!

Cris.
vladx
Well, i use FF and i also got a blank page at first but after a refresh the page was displayed correctly.
AndreiASM
Same for me, first attempt was without succes, but after refreshing the page, the content was displayed.
Cris
Umm... I refreshed the page about 20 times, with no success.
Then I cleared all cokkies, and the page worked just fine.

Back to the vsserv error: I sometimes have problems with my net connection (my ISP has a lot of problems). Could this be a cause for the vsserv crash? Maybe that site downloaded some cookies but, because the connection was unstable, they got corrupted (somehow). And when vsserv tried to scan the cookies, it crashed. Could this be possible?

Cris.
AndreiASM
What ISP do you have? Because if you have the same ISP with me (Clicknet), that could be true. Many times my internet connection just goes crazy (without vsserv crushes, however), beeing unable to open some web pages.
vladx

I don't think so because the browser would have crashed too if it was true.
Niels
Hi Cris

Did you already take a look at the logfiles and event viewer?
Sometimes you will find the cause.
I also had in the past a corrupt download but the virus shield service never crashed.

Regards
Niels
khufu
No problem here accessing site. Site loaded from first attempt.
I use FF 2.0.0.3
Cris
@Andrei: I have a smaller provider which allows metropolitan access, and which uses RDS to connect to the extern. Right now I'm having about 500ms ping to my local server (which normally should be around 0ms).

@Niels: I took a look. There are NO reports anywhere. In the EventLog, for today there are only 9 logs (for Security Center, ATI Smart and Winlogon ... no errors). Other log files that belong to BD don't exist.

Any other suggestions?

Cris.
AndreiASM
The only explanation I find it is that the problem is related to a faulty update, because I had 2 crushes (yesterday and today). Like i said earlier in the post, I had about 4-5 cruhes in a year of using BD, and now I had 2 in 2 days.

Hi to all.

This is my first post in this forum.

After passing from XP to Vista i am havin the same problem but only when i am using the eMule (p2p) program, since with all the rest BitDefender works great, but a few minutes after connecting emule a receive the same error. Any news on a fix for this. I have a licence for 2 years and i dont wont to change my security program.

Niels
@Cris: Take a look in task management (control+alt+del(ete))go to processes. Rightclick on the vsserv.exe process choose properties, change priority or something similar and choose lower then normal. See if vsserv.exe still crashes.

Hi DeepImpact

Are you using the latest version of emule wich is v0.48a ?
Did emule worked under windows xp?

Regards
Niels
AndreiASM
For me, it seems that the crushes arrive if there is high internet activitie. vsserv.exe crushed today while I was browsing 5 pages (using Opera), and downloading a kit. I changed the processe's priority (BelowNormal). I'll let you know if there are any changes.

Andrei
AndreiASM
Yup, 5 minutes after modifying it's priority it crushed again. dry.gif It's starting to get annoying...
Thijs
Yea I definitely hope there will be a fix soon.
I bought BitDefender but now it's not even installed because of the problem sad.gif ..

And I don't want to spend my time getting it running without crashing again, since I have more important things to do these days smile.gif.

Kind regards,

Hi.

Yes i have the latest version but the problem is the same. A few days ago (4) when i was working with XP i have no problems like this. If i uninstall bitdefender everything woks fine, then if i install the program again the problem ocurs, but untill now, only with emule.

Now i do not see any crash of vsserv, even if i have intense internet traffic.
Probably i`m lucky, i hope you people will have a fix soon wink.gif

Hey there,

I receive the same error messages time and time again. First I thought I had a virus or something like this. Then I associated it with uTorrent, because the error always appeared when I was using uTorrent. But today I even get it with FF and - what I think is funny - even when doing nothing on the internet.
I also checked the eventvwr and always before vsserv crashes. It says something like "TCP/IP reached its security limit for the amount of
contemporaneously TCP-connection attempts" (Sorry for the English, but I am German and for that I use a German WinXP).
Additionally I should mention: After vsserv crashes I'm unable to use FF as well as IE (both to start and to connect to a page) but I'm able to use Trillian and GoogleTalk.

It would be great if there was a update soon which remedies this fault, because resetting after every crash is very annoying (I get crashes about 4-6 times A DAY)

Hi Niels.

All our systems use Microsoft IE 7 - latest updates.

After a bitdef10 update on Friday, everything seemed to run smoothly over the weekend. Now, after an update this afternoon (following first power up) the problem is back on XP pro.
We have not yet fired up XP home.

Norton Antivirus is uninstalled and there are no norton or symantec processes at all runing after power up.

This could be a GPF (general protection fault) or something, since it makes the entire process to crush. maybe invalid value in ecx register? mellow.gif Hope BD guys saw this.

Hi vladx,

Well Cris, it's simple...everyone who wants to find it, must search for files with .tmp.dmp extension. So for BIS, i found it in C:\ProgramData\BitDefender\Desktop\Temp, but this is in Vista, i don't where it should be on XP.(probably in a temp folder)

P.S.:Good thing i remembered this from the time i beta tested Bitdefender v10.

Hi

Try to run emule in comptability mode. Rightclick on the installation folder choose properties, comptability, then choose for running it under windows xp service pack 2. Confirm by pressing on ok. If that fails try to check the follow options visual themes and desktop composition.

Hi

Try this to solve the error message your problem with your first problem :
http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497&p=2
You can also try to manually restart the virus shield service: by going to start, run,at the run dialog box type services.msc press enter. Now select the BitDefender Virus Shield and press on restart or start service.

Have you also executed the removal tool? Otherwise the Norton products aren't completely removed.
I thought that there were problems with one of the latest IE7 updates. Take a look here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937409

I haven't had problems for now about 7hours after i had 2 crashes in half an hour. Might even be, because I didn't use any p2p-program but even with FF there were no problems.

Hello Niels.

I haven't used the removal tool because I don't want to uninstall Norton SystemWorks, which I use to maintain our PCs. If I do uninstall I have to then re-install and it then takes forever performing updates which takes my 4 PCs out of business action. I am also then spending time doing IT support instead of design engineering. And all that costs my business money.

Also, I didn't have this problem until late last week and I hadn't changed anything to do with my Symantec or Norton set up. Plus the PC internet connection ran fine over the weekend. This is not consistent with norton/symantec stubs being a problem. It's the changes that have occured in bitdefender that are the problem.

So I am reluctant to perform an uninstall just at the moment without definate proof that it will help fix the problem. In the meantime I have downloaded the bitdefender support tools to see if they can help. At convienient times in the future I will carry out the symantec removal procedure.

Hello Steve

If it only happens after an update then indeed using the removal tool of Symantec products will not work.
I don't know any more solutions. The best thing is contact them via live chat. Because they can give your more specific things you can try. Because they aren't very active on this forum.

The problem does seem to be intermittent.

Things were running well this morning till about 10:10am local.

I have collected crash information as requested by the bitdefender support personnel and sent it off. I'll keep the thread up to date with what happens.

I only got one crash of vsserv.exe yesterday. But I have a different problem with vsserv.exe Every time when there is an update available it will use 100 % CPU and my computer freezes for a few seconds.

You can try this open BitDefender go to general, settings, uncheck BitDefender Outbreak protection.
Semin
So I'm having the same problem as someone before mentioned. After a few hours, Bit Defender starts blocking web browsers, but the WLM works fine. I tried to restart the vsserv.exe and it didn't work, the only solution is to restart the computer (which is very annoying to do once or twice a day). But when I disabled the vsserv.exe service, the internet worked fine, so this definitely is the problem. Any solutions?
