Full Version: Xp Sp2 Shutdown Failure After Installing Bd 2008 Is

I bought the 3 license pack for BD 2008 Internet Security. From the reviews it looked good. Now I am having second thoughts of installing it on my other 2 PCs after what has happened to my primary PC. I used to be a NOD32 user but gave up on them in favor of BD's packaging of a firewall with its AV product and the 3 license value. I completey removed NOD32, ran a utility they make to rip all the leftover NOD32 crap from the Windows registry. Installed BitDefender 2008 Internet Security, Ran all the updates, did full scans of my HD's (no viruses). Everything appeared to be running great then I noticed my PC stayed on all night even though I told it to shutdown and walked away. Figured it was a fluke at first, but it has happened every time since then. I have to hard-power the box off ever since.

Here is what happens...

The Windows Kernel seems to go through its normal processes of logging off and shutting down, then when the window is empty except for the cursor, the HD activity light goes crazy and some activity is seen on the HD's for at least 2 minutes before it settles down. Then, it sits there forever waiting for someone to pull the plug on the power.

Also, sometimes when I select the Programs menu or click the start button it will pause (freeze) for about 30 seconds before control is given back to me. This problem is even more annoying than the shutdown one. It only started happening after the BD install too.

Is there a fix for this annoying problem, other than un-installing BitDefender and going back to NOD32 or some other AV/Firewall product? Can I get a refund of my $49 for this if it cannot be fixed?

Dear GhostHawk,

I still recommend that you download this registry cleaner. Install it start it press on the modules tab and run the registry cleaner, press on scan your registry, once it finished let it repair everything.
Try this click on start, right click on my computer, click properties, press on the hardware tab, device manager, double click on universal serial bus controllers, right click on usb root hub, choose properties, power management, click on the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power so it will be unchecked press on ok. After that try a repair installation but first right click on the red BitDefender icon near the system clock and press on exit. Put in your installation cd-rom or double click on the installer package and peform a repair installation. Do you have other security software running in realtime mode?

Best regards
Niels

OK. I'll give your suggestions a try and follow up on this thread. I do run PC Tools Registry Mechanic once and a while so my registry is usually in pretty good shape. I am an IT Professional/MCSE/MCP so I take really good care of my main rig. I hope this works or I will be doing away with BitDefender for good and pursue a refund.

Tried all of the suggestions but it still hangs on the shutdown sequence. Got pretty upset over all this and simply un-installed the product (BitDefender Internet Security 2008 3-User License) and it works fine now. I guess I need to get a refund on this crappy product since it breaks my computers.
