I'm using Total Security 2008, and my anti-virus settings have email scanning enabled, but I've never seen any scanning take place. I never see a pop-up, nor does my "Scanned emails" count increase. I use Outlook Express to send/receive emails, and I'm
assuming that this is where the scanning should take place, but it doesn't appear to be happening.
Any ideas?

Unfortunately, that didn't help.
I forgot to mention in my first post that there was a pop-up notification one time a few weeks back, saying that my email was being scanned as it was being sent/received (I forget which), but it hasn't happened before or since that one occasion. I didn't change any settings (none that I'm aware of) so it's kind of confusing.
I tried sending an email to myself with an attachment, in case that was the only sort of mail scanned by BD, but nothing happened in that instance either.
Very strange.
Cheers!

Dear Paddy,
To check if the mails are being scanned please do this open BitDefender by rightclicking on the BitDefender icon near the system clock press on open advanced settings press on more statistics. Open outlook express and take a look at the statistics more escpecially those from the incoming and outgoing mails. Can you please also check this go to the installation directory of BitDefender double click on vshnet.ini ScanEmail should have 1 as a value everything under Settings should have 1 as value if not change it and save the file.

Hey Neils, thanks for the reply

Here is what my "More Statistics" page looks like:

Here is my "Custom Level" page for the anti-virus:

I checked my
vshnet.ini file, and the options in question have a "1" next to them, as do the other options.
When I received an email notifying me that you had replied to my last post, the scan count didn't change (as you can see above).
I'm stumped! hehehe
Thanks for your time

Dear Paddy,
Sometimes this helps also uncheck both scan incoming and scan outgoing mails press ok. Check these options once again and press ok. Double click also on vshield.ini scan pop3,scansmtp 1 should be set on 1. Can you find also bdfsfltr.sys into your BitDefender installation directory?
Try this go to start, run, type, devmgmt.msc into the run dialog box press enter go to the display (view) menu click on show hidden devices now you will see an entry called non plug and play compatible drivers now double click on the entry called bdftdif.sys click on the driver tab click on stop press on apply. After that press on start. It could be that some registry entry got corrupted. I recommend that you try a repair installation. First right click on BitDefender and click on exit. Put in the installation disc or double click on the installer package and use the repair option.

None of the above worked, and on top of that I now have to start from scratch again because the repair install deleted all of my preferences and program rules. Incidentally, is there a way for me to backup all of my preferences in case I need to do this again? The only option I've found is in the Advanced settings page, but that's nowhere near sufficient.
There is one thing I noticed, though. It's with regards to the
vshield.ini file. You mentioned that the
ScanSmtp option should have a "1" next to it. When I checked it, it had a "0". I was unable to change the file, however, because it appears to be protected. Any ideas?
Also, the
ScanWeb option in the same file has a "0" next to it. Is this anything to do with the "Scan Http" option in the anti-virus settings? I have that option checked, so if the two are linked then it means my http scanning isn't working either.
Cheers!

Paddy, did you see my post:
http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=3990Are you leaving your stats window displayed while sending/receiving emails? My counts are zero each time I first display the window but if activity occurs while displayed it shows a count (not the correct count, but a count).

Thanks for the reply.
I did what you said and left the "More Statistics" page open while I sent/received emails via Outlook Express. Unfortunately my count didn't increase at all, but I did notice that in the "Last scanned files" log my Outlook Express folders showed up in the scan. I'm guessing that this is just an "on-access" scan, rather than a specific email scan. Either way, my "Scanned emails" count hasn't budged. I'm not sure if this is just a "cosmetic" problem, in that the count number is unchanged but the scanning is in fact taking place, or if no email scans are occurring at all.
Cheers Mike

I've been following this thread as I have noticed mine does the same thing running Windows Vista and using Windows Mail. I've also checked it leaving it open and it has no change, but like Paddy I also noticed that when an email arrives it does show in the list of real-time files being scanned.
I sent an email to tech support concerning this (and a few other problems I'm having) last week. Their initial response was to just uninstall and reinstall the software. I've sent a follow-up informing them that this has no effect on the problem, but have gotten no further reply yet.
If they give me any useful info, I'll be sure and post it here.

Dear Paddy and darren
Keep in mind that BitDefender can't scan mail if your isp uses ssl to send mails. But once you open an attachment BitDefender realtime protection will also react.
It can only scan pop/smtp. That could also be the reason. Please check this go to tools,e-mail accounts, and see what is written under type. It should pop/smtp. I am only a normal user so I don't work for Softwin (BitDefender).
The reason why you couldn't change it because that file is in use. Try to do it in safe mode. Reboot your pc but press several times on the F8 buton before the windows loading screen and log in with your account and edit the .ini file again.

Hello again

All of my email accounts are POP/SMTP, however some of them (for instance, my Yahoo! account) require that its users tick the SSL connection option in the account settings of Outlook Express. Is this what you meant when you mentioned SSL?
Thanks for all the time you've spent on this

Dear Paddy,
Yes that is what I meant. So if you receive yahoo mails they will not be scanned. Only when you open attachments. Other antiviruses also can't scan mails that are being send on a ssl line.
