i want to scan a rar file that i've dowloaded, but when i right click the rar file and select scan with BD AV 2008, nothing happens, i have to ctrl, alt & delete to come out of the freezing.

win XP pro SP2

Dear bjproc

Normally uiscan.exe must be running when you take a look at task manager on the processes tab. That process is used to peform such a scan. Was uiscan.exe using 100%? BitDefender will also automatically scan the archive when you extract it.

Best regards

thanks Niels,

this is the message i get when i tried to scan a word document i've just downloaded, also the same as the rar file.

this is happening on both my PC & laptop, just happened there on the laptop just now, and, no, the uiscan.exe is not running.

this has just started when i've upgraded my keys from a 2 year 1 user to a 2 year 2 user, but i can't think why it would/could do anything with the program ????

Hi!

I downloaded the trial version of BD IS 2008 to install on 3 computers hoping to purchase the licenses in the next couple of weeks. I am getting the same error as bjproc. I tried to uninstall it with and without the BitDefender tool, but always get the same results. This is on Vista Ultimate x32, the laptop with Vista Business x32 does not seem to have this problem.

I do get a pop up from time to time from BD telling me that the scanner has stopped and to send a bug report.

Any suggestions?

@everyone who have THIS problem (BitDefender Antivirus scanner failed to be launched): This problem also appeared on my computer yesterday...twice. I have no idea what caused it, nor since when this is happening (I noticed it yesterday, but maybe it happened before). Also, in both cases, the problem was fixed only after a reboot.

I made the following test: I went to System Servicies (Start -> Control Pane -> Administratice Tools). I noticed that all BitDefender services were working, but the BitDefender Threat scanner (and module that actually scans the files) was set on Manual (this is the default setting). If I stop that service, the hole BitDefender scanner becomes useless... unsure.gif

So: try to set this service (BitDefender Threat Scanner) to Automatic. See if the problems still occur.

I'll try to contact someone about this issue (it appears to be a new bug, because I would have noticed it before).

So my suggestion fixed the problem? Please be more clear because I need to know for sure (I don't want to make assuptions about this issue, because it's very serious).

Hi Cris, unfortunately for me it is not working. I have set it to Automatic as suggested and even set to restart the service if it stops on all 3 Recovery options but still no go. The scanner just stops working and this is on a system that never had BD before. I have an image of this computer (Vista Ultimate 32) and my laptop (Vista Business 32) before BD or any antivirus and firewall was installed and I get the error on both computers.

This is a BD problem, I have tried for several hours to re-install the image and re-install BD and after the initial update after installation, that is when it stops working. In the program settings under shield, when I click on "more statistics" usually I see the number of files that have been scanned but now they are always at 0. The BD activity bar is always showing when something is being scanned and now it is just there (with no red X) without any activity in the "File Zone" The Net Zone does appear to be scanning though.

If I install BD on both computers and omit the updates after installation and just keep using with what the program installation came with it does not stop and I have no problems. This is happening with an update that occured between now and when the BD trial program was released.

Honestly though, I appreciate your help on this and I was hoping to purchase BitDefender for the other 4 computers in my home but with the update issue a little while back that everyone was having a problem with and now this I have since put back the images on both computers and am trialing another suite that I may purchase in the coming weeks. Bitdefender has already caused me to waist to much time on something that should either work or been tested longer before release.

Have a good day.

i've not had a problem with it so far, but that doesn't mean it's fixed it, as it's an intermitant problem with me & i've not had enough time today to play around with it (main PC has a virus that BD & others didn't deal with and i can't get rid of it, so it looks like a reinstall of windows sad.gif )

as i said, it looks like a workaround, not a complete fix, BD will have to sort this out.

but going on the above post, it looks like it's not fixed it

any update about this issue?

EDIT;

i seee in the threat scanner thread (same problem?), that an automatic updat will be realeased for this
Cris
There's no news yet about this. I reported this issue 2 days ago, and all I was told is to run the debug tools whenever the problem appears.

But, unfortunately, just like Murphy's laws, when you want something to go bad (e.g. BD engine stops working), it doesn't. Since I talked to TechSupport, my BD worked just fine (and NO, it wasn't because the problem was fixed, because there was no update). I'm still waiting for it to happen...

But: all of you having this problem please read this: http://www.bitdefender.com/KB95-en--Asking...assistance.html
Whenever the problem appears (the engine stops), please run the tools from that page and send the reports to support@bitdefender.com, along with a complete description of the problem (you should also add a link to this thread).

That is a different problem. It might be related to this one, it might not. I don't know.
For instance, I'm having THIS problem (my BD's engine stops working, without any errors), but I don't have THAT problem (as I said, I don't get ANY errors).

just an update

uiscan.exe is not running in the processes on my laptop or desktop
bjproc
another edit

i opened process's to see what the cpu usage was, and uiscan.exe did appear when i scaned a file, then dissapears when the scan is finished.

if this is any help
Cris
uiscan.exe is the module used for On Demand scanning and has nothing to do with the realtime protection (it's what you see when you manually scan a file). All that you've described is the normal behavior.

ok, but i was just going with what was said in post #2
Cris
Yes. uiscan.exe has to be running when you make a Manual Scan. But that's all. It opens when the scan starts and it closes when the scan finishes. It doesn't have to run all the time.

Dear bjproc

Try this go to start, run, type C:\Program Files\BitDefender2008\uiscan.exe /REGSERVER press enter. Try again to scan a single file or folder.

I have the same problem. When I run an on-demand scan nothing happens and the only way to recover is to reboot the system (hard reboot -- Windows won't shut down). In fact Windows in general goes to pieces after I attempt a scan. The Services applet fails to function. Explorer goes belly up. In general BitDefender acts just like I would expect a virus to act making my system unusable -- and no, I don't have a virus on the machine. The solution mentioned here does not work for me and in fact nothing appears to happen. The only difference for me (from what others appear to be reporting) is that it is only happening on 1/2 machines and the machines are identical in hardware and nearly identical in software. I have been trying to isolate the problem for some time now but have been unable to do so. The first time this happened a re-install fixed the problem but this no longer helps. I have now re-installed 3 times using the uninstall tool and the problem still exists.

I am utterly disgusted with BD at the moment and the continuous probelms I have had with this product -- this is not the first -- and the lack of any decent customer support. We need these issues fixed! I am just waiting for my license to run out so that I can go purchase something that works!

I am also having this problem. When I right click on a file to start an on demand scan, BD just freezes. I have to ctrl+alt+del and click End Process on uiscan.exe. Thats's when the Scan Error pops up "BitDefender Antivirus Scanner failed to be launched!"

I tried start - run -
C:\Program Files\BitDefender2008\uiscan.exe /REGSERVER
C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2008\uiscan.exe /REGSERVER
C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2008\uiscan.exe \REGSERVER
C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2008\uiscan.exe/REGSERVER
C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2008\uiscan.exe\REGSERVER

Each time windows could not find it.

The only way I can do an on demand scan is to place a short cut to uiscan.exe on my desktop, then browse for the file(s) i want to scan.

Hope this helps someone

I am having the same problem, has anybody found a solution for this yet?
Niels
Hello ShaunBerg,

I recommend that you try this download this BitDefender uninstall tool.Right click on the red BitDefender icon near the system clock choose exit. Now run the uninstaller and reboot your pc when asked. Install BitDefender again. If the problem still persits please follow these instructions. After that contact support trough live chat. Select technical support.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling with and without the install tool.
No Luck.

I traced the dependency files for UISCAN.exe and detected 3 missing files MSVCR80.DLL, MSVCP80.DLL AMD MFC80U.DLL
Part of the C++ version 8 Runtime (WINSxS). The files were found to be missing everytime I installed Bitdefender.

The shot in the dark workaround that worked for me:

1. I uninstalled Bitdefender using the uninstall tool and rebooted.
2. Downloaded and Installed Bitdefender Free Edition v10, updated and rebooted.
3. Reinstalled Bitdefender 2008 with the free edition still installed. (The free edition was removed during the install process)

i m using an original stardard version bitdefender with 365days ( now still left 256days)

i also having the same problems.

previously i uninstall my bitdefender by using
(BitDefender_Uninstall_Tool.exe)

then i reinstall it back to my laptop(in the same laptop), during the installation,

i notice that the update not running...

when i restart my pc, i start normal, but i can not perform
any scanning. when i do so, the words
scan error -"bitdefender antivirus scanner failed to be launced"

can any one give me some advice??

Sorry to be so late to the party, but I had this issue myself and solved it. I don't know how to prevent it, but the BitDefender support staff was getting nowhere. I installed BD Internet Security 2009 on Oct 1 2008, and it quit doing scheduled scans on 10-23, and I was not able to run a manual scan either. The message was "scan failed to launch" or something similar. At this time I could no longer apply any updates, auto or manual. When "update now" was pressed, nothing happened. The support staff had me run all kinds of tools, extracting logs and text files. Each email conversation item took 24 hours to do. The last straw occurred when they had me send zip copies of 5 innocent files which they suspected of being virus files. They wanted me to do the crazy unistall/install. No way.

I took it upon myself to look at the registry entries. The path in the registry did not match the folder names in the system files (found in c:/program files/common files/BitDefender/BitDefender Threat Scanner/av32bit_9999, where 9999 is some type of update number. I merely extracted the key from the registry, updated it with a text editor to match the real path name, and made my changed key update the registry. No reboot necessary. Everthing began working immediately. My fix was done Nov 5 and there has been no problem since.

I provided this information to the support staff via email hoping they could enlighten others, or find out why the Oct 23rd update failed to update the registry, and all they did was thank me for being able to close the ticket, and that's that!!!
