I'm Running IS2008 on XP/SP2 and 10% of the time, some files are locked until reboot. Such as my Favorites Internet shortcuts for example, where access to some of them produces an "Access denied" error. If I stop all IS2008 services, they are then unlocked and accessible.
This is a real problem when working with databases that are getting locked in the middle of something, and when running a program that can't open its ini file and tries to create one. Errors after errors. Very frustrating.
I have 3 licenses on 3 PCs and can't continue working this way.
Any fixes or ideas please?

Phew!
I thought for a while that I had caught a virus or some other nasty thing. My computer has been really wonky last couple of days, files have been locked all over the place and finally the whole machine has ground(?) to a halt.
Glad to see some other person with similar problems. At least I know now where the problem lies. Please fix this soon!
Sorry no ideas or help.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. I've uninstalled IS2008 and all my problems are gone. I've paid for 3 users and I am now without protection until the bugs are fixed. The support team seem not to care. I've posted other issues and it went with no answers. Perhaps it's time for a refund and look for something else. Unless BD team starts answering questions at least!

Dear haude and SBL
Check the rights the on the folders where you don't have access to. To do that reboot your pc into safe mode by pressing several times on the F8 button before the windows loading screen select safe mode and press enter. Choose for the administrator account, right click on the folder where you have problems with click on properties, press on the security tab, advanced, owners, you have to check your account, press on ok to confirm.
To see which process is blocking the access use
unlocker. Install it rightclick on the folders or files that are locked you will now see which process is blocking the access.

All right, but as soon as i reboot my pc all the locked files / folders are released and everything works just fine for a while. When I leave the computer running for a couple of hours the files start to get locked again.
I have only two accounts on my pc, myself (with admistrator privileges) and the built-in administrator account.
I'll try the unlocker next time this happens.
thanks,

Dear haude
Till now you are the only 2 persons that have this issue on this forum. Please post which process is using the folders so you can't get access with unlocker. So it's easier to see which process is causing this behaviour.
Download
this program. Reboot your pc into safe mode by pressing several times on the F8 button before the windows loading screen. Select safe mode press enter log in with the administrator account and run the tool if a restriction found then you can check it you have only to see at folder options and press on remove.

Unfortunately, I'm the third one. I would get this error after rebooting my computer for, say, around 10 hours or so. I have to reboot my computer then it looked like everything is fine. But after 10 hours or more it will definitely happen again, no exceptions. I'm a heavy MMOG player and P2P user and I really hate this error haunting me for almost a month. I've tried Unlocker, Process Explorer, and I've even added Spy Sweeper to my autostart list but nothing found. I will install RRT as you suggested and try to locate the problem as I can.
Oh just FYI, my uTorrent will keep displaying a message "Unable to save the resume file" while this error happened. eMule will display the message "Permission denied" too.

Dear Heyman
Can you please say which process is blocking this is really important? The BitDefender processes are bdss.exe,vsserv.exe if that aren't the processes that are using the folder then the chance is high that it isn't BitDefender fault. Because only bdss.exe and vsserv.exe scans file in realtime mode.

Hello Niels,
You are forgetting one
very important thing here:
bdss.exe doesn't exist anymore in BD 2008.
@everyone: instead of bdss, look for
svchost.exe (which is a system application that runs some of the Windows Services, including
BitDefender Threat Scanner, which is what replaced bdss.exe).

I'm having the same problem. On an undetermined time all accesses to disk are blocked. Then I can't delete files, I can't delete emails, the emule and the utorrent can't access to disk, the google toolbar on the firefox stops working. When I close those programs an error appears because they can't write their information. After a reboot the programs start to work well until the next time it stops working.

Thank Niels for fast reply. I've tried several utilities to locate the exact process which denied my access. But all I could see is a lot of irrelevant programs except several svhost.exe as Cris mentioned and None of them blockade my access. That's why I don't know how to answer your question.
All I can say is when I used another Anti-virus program instead of BDIS the problem was gone. I am not indicating or suggesting that it must be BDIS' problem but it's kinda weird isnt it?

Dear Heyman
Did you also dowload the program that I asked Laude to download? Another question I suppose that you first removed your previous antivirus. If not follow
these instructions. I recommend that you uninstall BitDefender by using
this tool. Run it and reboot your pc. Install BitDefender again. If the problem still persist please follow
these instructions Afterwards contact
livesupport select technical support and explain your problem. They will also ask to send these files. I don't know any solution anymore.

Dear all
You could try this also before contacting support:
Check the properties of the folders or files by right clicking on them the check box read-only must be unchecked. If not remove the check and press on apply and ok. Check your hard disc also on errors to do that go to start,my computer, now right click on the icon of your hard disc choose properties, tools, scandisk (checkdisc), scan now check both options and press start confirm the message the scan will taken place at the next boot.

I've done all what you suggested Niels, but none of it works! I run XP32/SP2, no HD errors. My temp folder is now filling up with temp files that all my running apps can't delete. Any files I now create can not be deleted. And, the Unlocker program say that there are no lock handles on any of the files, but yet, Windows say that the files can not be deleted, access denied. I'm running in admin. I ran a full system scan using IS2008 and it locked all my files, now I can't seem to reboot, it just site their saying 'Saving your setting...' and does nothing. No HD activity, just once every 10 secs or so.
When I uninstall IS2008, the above does not happen at all. But it does as soon as I install it. I've uninstalled it using the uninstall tool.
I hate to have to dump IS2008. Is there anything that can be done?
Thanks for the help.

I'm getting the same thing folks. I'm running Vista and I installed a NAS on my network and the backup program couldn't back up half my data because it said it was locked by some other process. I rebooted and all was well. This is the second issue I've reported on this forum in as many days. I think the latest "patch" is a POS and we'd be better off running the version before the patch. I guess BD doesn't believe in QA before putting out a product. Guess I'll look for a Symantec product now.

We have seen this issue on 2 different computers. My company receives problem reports from customers who are using our product and experiencing errors. Both of these computers have BitDefender installed and the error symptom is identical. I don't know what the OS level error is but the high-level error message is "Unable to obtain file lock". Our product has a significant user base and we have not seen this error on any computers that do not have BitDefender installed.
Note that we could not reproduce the issue using a virtual machine in house.
In short, it would be nice to see this issue resolved.
Thanks!

I agree completely with the other posts in this thread: I am encountering terrible problems with files getting locked. Files sometimes become locked only moments after I create them.
This is a brand new, complete re-build of an XP machine - service pack 2 and all updates. BitDefender was the first non-OS program installed. There is no vestige of old abandoned software. Deep system scans show no problems. I have tested extensively trying to find a relationship with open software, but there is none.
I can cause the problem after a cold re-boot by simple file maintenance such as renaming, moving, and deleting. NO software other than Windows Explorer is open, not even Internet Explorer. The mysterious file locking behavior is not predictable. The lock-up might happen after only 10 or 15 maneuvers, but might take 50 or more.
Unlocker will NOT unlock files. Stopping obvious BitDefender processes (such as BDAgent and services) does NOT unlock files. The only cure I have found is a time-consuming re-boot.
I have not yet tried a BD removal and re-installation, but will shortly.
Thanks.

I too am experiencing major problems with this program. I purchased the 3 computer package and installed BD on two. Same problem.
I first noticed it when even my bookmarks were changed and locked. They changed to local directories instead of internet (http) addresses and could not be deleted due to access permissions, even in admin mode.
Then I noticed a severe locking up of my computer with BDAgent not responding when I tried to logout and reboot the machine. I'm running Win XP/SP2.
When I tried to defrag the computer, thinking that might help, windows defrag program locked up. I waited 3 hours for it to respond because rebooting in the middle of a defrag can cause data loss. That still didn't work and I had to reboot the computer anyway.
I also saw the program completely turn off my firewall and AV protection.
I saw thousands of errors in my system logs referring back to this program.
I can't have this. I can't have a program on my computer doing things I didn't ask it to do and causing severe havoc during an online session.
I recommended this program to millions of users who play WoW, but now I'm going to rescind that advice until this problem is fixed. Too many others I know who used it as well, have the very same consequences using the same exact setup as me. Reinstall does not eliminate the problem. Game mode doesn't prevent BDAgent from completely locking up either.
This program has problems.
I'm reinstalling Avast until all these issues are addressed. I doubt very much that live chat can clear up half of the problems I experienced with BD.
EDIT: Forgot to mention I purchased the stand-alone AV package, not the full IS version and these lockup/lockout problems/changes occurred with that edition for me, so I doubt it's just a problem with the IS version alone.

I uninstalled and re-installed BitDefender last night. I then worked on about 75 files renaming, creating, and deleting as normal. Not a single failure! Not a single file lock-up! This might be the solution. I will continue to test.

I contact the technical support. You have to do that to help to found the trouble. I reproduce the error with about 2000 erasing/creating files but when is a database is lock you have a problem....
Dear Marc Paquin,
In order to better understand the situation you are dealing with we
need more
information about your operating system and BitDefender. Thus please be
so
kind to take few moments and read the following KB article:
http://www.bitdefender.com/KB389-en--Askin...assistance.htmlThis article contains complete instructions on how to use the tools,
what the
tools do and how to submit the reports.
NOTE: The information you send us is used for testing purposes only and
will
be treated accordingly.
Additionally please include a screenshot of the error message you
receive.
We will try to reproduce the situation in our lab and we'll get back to
you
with a possible solution.

I am another one having this same problem, locked files. Rebooting clears it up and it only seems to happen after the computer has been on for awhile. Trying to change the files to or from "read only" will not work as it won't allow you to change it. I think it says "accsess denied" I will download and try the tools listed above. This is the evaluation copy of the software I'm running and only have a few days left on it. I would like to purchase the softare but can't see doing that if this error is still going to be a problem. Is there an older versioin of the antivirus software available that might not have this error?
Thanks

Hi there,
Just to add my info to this thread. I started a new one under 'Problems With Opera And Uninstall Tool' before I knew of this one.
I had file locking problems with Opera, Azureus and OpenOffice. Rebooting would free the files again for a while. I was using just the 2008 Anti-virus. Eventually, I used the recommended uninstall tool and uninstalled 2008, after which there were still 442 references to Bitdefender in the registry! I re-installed V10 four days ago and have had no problems since then.
The unresponsiveness of the BD team to this problem is most worrying. I know this is a user forum but if Softwin are not monitoring it they should be. How many others have this problem and simply gave up on BD or, like me started a different thread.
Wake up Softwin. You used to have a great product.

Hello all,
Yes have had the same problem as you guys, this happeed on 2 out of 3 istallatios of ISS2008. Problems occurred within hours.
There is always the added possibility that the problem is there on the third machine, but just hasn't caused any visable errors.
I contacted the live chat support and explained the problem. The guy iitially insisted that BD would not lock any files that were not infected - "No way Marc" I was told. So I directed him to this forum, which he read, the apologised for not being aware of the issue.
I requested an older, more stable edition, and a temporary Licence key to use it until the issue was resolved. Guy went away to consult supervisor I presume, and came back with links to v10 setup, the BD uninstaller tool, and also gave me a 30day/3PC licence to use with v10.
I have istalled the previous version, and no problems yet, I wil reinstall 2008 in a months time to see if the issue is resolved.
I was also given a ticket number, so I guess someone might get back to me about it. I suggest everyone do the same, then maybe SoftWin will realise there is a big problem when high amounts of users are requesting previous versions & Keys to use them.

Well a little update. I downloaded the tools listed in the thread above and was going to run them the next time it locked files. I have not had any problems in the
last few days with locked files or bdagent.exe hanging. I'm not sure if there was an update that fixed the problem or what exactly. So far it seems to be working
fine. Hopefuly it will no longer be an issue.

Same problem here. I logged on here to try and find an answer. Spent 4 hours yesterday trying to install Acrobat 8 on a customers machine. He had installed BD2008 a couple of days ago. Every time I run the Acrobat installer it would fail with Error 1303 insufficient privileges, you are not allowed to access C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat etc etc. Tried all sorts of things from Adobe Tech Support to no avail. The one thing I hadn't tried was dropping to safe mode and changing permissions there, although I had tried changing permissions under normal mode. The only reason I hadn't tried this is I'm doing it all through remote desktop and RDP doesn't let you drop to safe mode. VNC, however, will. So I tried to install VNC, same Error 1303. Uninstalled BD2008 and everything works and installs fine.
UNACCEPTABLE!
SOFTWIN PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM ASAP OR WE WILL BE ASKING FOR A FULL REFUND ON THE PRODUCT.
