I'm running version 10 now and I'm considering upgrading to version 2008. I'm still within my lic. period, is there a free upgrade path? Is there a comparison chart between version 10 and 2008?

On the order page it's asking for the number of users? Is that the number of PCs or the number of concurrently logged on XP users? It seems strange to be paying extra for each user one on PC.

The Gamer Mode in 2008. Does it really work? Right now the bdss.exe process in consuming a great deal of my CPU most of the time. I'm almost at the point of looking for a new virus program. Any thoughts on this?

TIA for help,

Frank

Dear garberfc

Yes but you can only use your current key for the same version that you have now installed. BitDefender Antivirus Plus can be upgraded to BitDefender Internet Security. You can't upgrade for free to Total Security because that is new product. You need to uninstall version 10 by using this tool. Download it and run it. You have just to enter your previous licence key. You can see here a comparison for the 2008 products. There isn't a comparison for 10 and the 2008 products.

That is on how many pc's or laptops you wanted to install BitDefender on. Even if you have multi boot pc it still counts as 1 pc = 1 licence. That hasn't do anything with the amount of user accounts on 1 pc (laptop).

Yes it reduces the cpu usage of bdss. In the previous version also in this version you could exclude certain folders and opt to not scanning files or folder larger then ... That will also decreases the cpu usage.

Thanks for the help!
I'm going to do the free upgrade to Anti Virus 2008. The upgrade page http://kb.bitdefender.com/KB387-en--Upgrad...virus-2008.html says I can install over version 10 or remove it first. It there an advantage one way or the other?

Thanks,
Frank

I did remove some of the folders from the real time scan and it did greatly improve performance. Are there any guidelines on what makes sense to include and exclude?

Thanks,

Dear garberfc

The reason why I recommend to use the uninstall tool is to avoid conflicts. The chance is very high if you upgrade from BitDefender Antivirus Plus to Internet Security that you will have conflicts.

Yes you can improve the performance of realtime protection by checking exclude files that are larger then a certain size. By default it's +/- 5mb but you can change the size. To do that go to the antivirus section, shield tab, click on custom. Don't forget to press on ok to confirm. You can also uncheck scanning network drivers or but this might be risky disable http traffic scanning.

Glad that I could help you.

@garberfc: Note that the default size limit is the optimum setting for security/performance balance. If you lower this limit, it will increase the performance, but it will lower the security level. Also, raising this limit involves more security, but less performance.

The lowest recommended value for this setting is ~3MB. Any lower than that makes the Realtime Protection virtually useless.
