Full Version: Slow System While Scanning Pagefile

Hi everybody,
I have a problem with my BD IS Version 10. Sometimes he slows down my system for minutes (maybe 4). Everything is running extremely slow. So I watched the activity and I saw that vsserv.exe is operating with my Pagefile -> pagefile.sys which has a size of 1.5 GB.
This is very strange because there is no system scan running and the settings define a maximum scansize of 10 MB. So the file should be excluded...
Why is this happening?

Thank you,
Rudi

Hello rudihaus

To clarify things are you saying that when you take a look at the scanned files that pagefile.sys is being scanned or is vsserv.exe using a part of your page file? The second case is normal that will happen when there isn't enough free internal memory. Where you only can do is closing unnecessary programs or placing more memory. pagefile will always be used and accessed. Exclude it by going to antivirus, shield press on custom level and press on the option exclude path from scan press on add new item and set C:\pagefile.sys

Best regards

@Niels: this doesn't work! In BDv10 you can only exclude folders, not files. If you try to exclude C:\, you'll exclude from scan all files on that partition, which is a very high security risk!

Hello Cris

You are right. I forgot that it wasn't possible in the previous version. Thanks for correcting me.

Hi Niels,
thank you for the fast reply!
Sorry i didn't saw at the scan log (I should do this the next time).
I started Filemonitor from sysinternals and then i saw the high usage on pagefile.sys.

This scenario happens just sometimes. It happens also after starting my PC when the memory is free. I have 1.5 GB RAM so i don't think that windows will write the ram to the hdd.
any ideas?

Rudi

Hello rudihaus

How many internal memory does your computer have?

First of all your operating system uses a certain part of your memory if you are running other programs the chance is very high that the pagefile is being used. I suggest that you clear you pagefile and let it manage by windows afterwards. To do that click on start, right click on my computer, choose properties, advanced, performance press on settings, advanced, virtual memory (swap file, page file) press on change (adjust) select first no page file (no swap file/virtual memory) press on apply. When it's done select let windows manage your page file. Press on apply. Sometimes this behaviour is due an fragmented pagefile which could cause slowdowns. You can defragment your pagefile by using this tool. You only need to do that when there are too many fragmented files.

Hi Niels,

yes I understand the purpose and the function of the pagefile. I have checked the number of fragments with your tool. There are exactly two fragments. So it should run efficiently.

If it is during the normal usage of the computer (after one hour) I would agree with you that he's outsourcing pages from the memory to the pagefile.
but there are some arguments that this is not the case:

- Bitdefender doesn't need very much RAM at this moment. Around 10-16 MB (all services of BD) So he cannot outsource for 4 minutes...

- It happend also sometimes at the systemstart where the memory is mostly free. so no outsourcing is needed.

- If a page in the RAM is permanently being used, windows won't write it to the hdd. Just programs which are in idle mode. And bitdefender needs maybe 40% cpu (60 % in idle thread).

What do you mean with internal memory?
My data: 1.5 GB RAM, 1.5 GB pagefile, 120 GB HDD (6 GB free on system partition)

best regards,
Rudi
