Full Version: Vista User Control

I have just moved BitDefender v10 from my old laptop to my new one as part of upgrading to new hardware and retiring an older machine. The old one used Vista Enterprise but had User Account Control disabled. The new one has Vista Business with UserAccount Control enabled.

I now find that when I boot up, bdmcon.exe and bdagent.exe need to be given permission to start explicitly each and every time the operating system loads up. I completely removed and re-installed after finding that bsmcon.exe would not start automatically and now I have the problem with both these processes. I do not want to disable User Account Control. The old system had no such troubles but did have User Account Control off.

The fact that I have an administrator account on the local machine should be irrelevant as by default Vista runs stuff without elevated permissions to start with anyway. Executables and services that act together to protect systems should be able to run all the time and should be the first things to run and not need to wait for explicit permissions.

There must be something that is not being reset to default values in registry or something like that with the uninstall, for everything not to go back to default values on reinstallation.

Any ideas would be welcome.

cheers

Hello PeterW

Right click on the BitDefender shortcut click on the advanced button, check run as administrator and press on ok.

If you license is still valid you can upgrade for free to the BitDefender 2008 product line. But only for the corresponding version which means BitDefender Antivirus -> BitDefender Antivirus 2008 ; BitDefender Antivirus Plus or BitDefender Internet Security -> BitDefender Internet Security 2008

Run as Administrator is already set but does not do anything. I mean, you can select Run as administrator or go to the Compatabilities tab and check Run as Administrator but that is only fine for programs launched manually. It still comes up and asks the user if it is OK to run each time or User Access Control catches them and flags that they have not been alllowed to start and leaving you to start them manually. For a virus checker that is nonsense, the question should not even be being asked at all and it should be one of the very first items to run. If you turn User Account Control off then it doesn't, but then you gut the protection that the operating system is supposed to be giving you just to get some peace and quiet so you can get on with some real work. That frankly is not good enough.

Hello PeterW

Keep in mind this is just a user forum were all moderators are just volunteers.

Try this type secpol.msc into the start menu search box and press on enter. Now browse down to local policies/ security options, find User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode and double click on it. Change it to Elevate without prompting and press on ok. Now the administrators will not receive any message anymore but your are still being an usual user while surfing the internet.

Thank you for that. It was just what the doctor ordered. Finding these buried pearls of wisdom is like looking for a needle in a haystack they are so elusive.

I was also being plagued by the extreme slowness of the internal web browser in Visual Studio 2005 and was sure it was related to BitDefender. I ended up turning off all the services that BitDefender spawns and instead of waiting 5 minutes while a page tried to display fully whilst in debugging mode on a site under construction, perfermance went back up to acceptable levels. So, how to control this. Well if you look on the browser you will see an Anti-Phishing icon on a toolbar. This allows you to whitelist a site. You can whitelist the localhost and port used by visual Studio and then happily get on with some work. The fact that the port number changes often is something I can live with.
