Can anyone tell me the point of sending out virus or corrupting files to the general public. It's not as though he/she can see you, get wound up or watch you struggle to get your computer to work. What is the point?

I did a scan this evening and it came up with a Virus in C:\system volume information\restore ( b37680bs etc, etc. I don't know what it does, all it means is I now have to find out how to remove it. It then begs the question how did it get through Bit defender?

Hello french47

If you mean why these people make that kind of programs. A few possibilities are just for "fun" to get "known" in the scene to do harm or to steal important files. Otherwise I don't know what you exaclty tried to say?

If you use windows xp as operating system you have a feature called system restore which makes an image before each change to your system e.g a new installation of programs, driver updates, new hardware or when you create one point but windows makes on specific times also images. BitDefender has removed the infections but even if you replace the old restore point you will not get infected. In the new 2008 product line can delete these restore points. In the previous versions you have to do this go to start, rightclick on my computer choose properties, system restore, settings, check disable system restore on all stations confirm wait till everything is greyed out and uncheck it afterwards. It could be that the realtime protection blocks it rightclick on the red BitDefender icon near the system clock and press on realtime protection enabled. Don't forget to click it again to re-enable it again.

More reasons for writing viruses and sending them out.

1. To steal your credit card number, social security number, PayPal account, name, any other information that may be of use.

2. To turn your computer into a "zombie". To build a huge network of zombie computers and then use them to send spam or to perform DDoS attacks on servers.

3. To encrypt your valuable files and deny you access to them, then ask you to pay "ransom" in order to decrypt them and restore access.

Lately, it's done for profit, not just for fame, as was the case in the beginning. dry.gif

Thanks for your reply,
Playing football is fun, Drinking beer is fun, chasing girls is fun. Wrecking someones computer is sick.
A person must lead a sad life to want to corrupt a stangers computer system
Thanks for your time.
