I have been a long time user of BD in windows XP. Recently I upgraded to Vista and at the same time upgraded to BD AV 2008. Since then I have had the vsserv.exe crash a few times a day.

When the service crashes it still shows as running when i look at the task manager, but on the BD control panel it says that the Antivirus protection is not running. Also, the vsserve.exe service appears to be running but it is taking up about 70% of my CPU on one core (Intel Dual Core CPU). This CPU usage is constant. If I reboot and BD is functioning properly there is not this CPU usage.

When i look at event viewer I see that vsserv.exe is faulting and there are a few different faulting modules.

Examples:

Faulting application vsserv.exe, version 11.0.0.272, time stamp 0x46eea418, faulting module ole32.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bd92, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000332b6, process id 0x12d8, application start time 0x01c804425760d5e5

Faulting application vsserv.exe, version 11.0.0.272, time stamp 0x46eea418, faulting module npcomm.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bdc9, exception code 0xc0000135, fault offset 0x00008fc7, process id 0x17c0, application start time 0x01c80413be24079e.

Faulting application vsserv.exe, version 11.0.0.272, time stamp 0x46eea418, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bd80, exception code 0xe06d7363, fault offset 0x0001b09e, process id 0x16d8, application start time 0x01c8018df10f9d02.

Faulting application vsserv.exe, version 11.0.0.272, time stamp 0x46eea418, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bdc9, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00030e32, process id 0xe44, application start time 0x01c80163f2441772.

I've checked my memory and there are no problems there. Also, no other programs are crashing though there is an error being generated that looks like it might be related.

Event ID 7011
Service Control Manager Event Log Provider
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the service.

and sometimes like this:

Event ID 7011
Service Control Manager Event Log Provider
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the LIVESRV service

The first error is generated every hour ( XX:45:00 PM).

The second error is genernated once per day at the same time each day ( XX:45:00 PM).

The BitDefender Virus Shield terminates unexpectedly about once per day at the same time as the above two errors ( XX:45:00 PM).

Any ideas?

Just wanted to chime in that I had (sort-of) the same issue today.

- BitDefender was fine
- Wife logged me out of my standard user account
- When I logged back in vsserv.exe was using tons of CPU usage and BitDefender was reporting errors that I wouldn't let me correct.

Although I'm sure the services were running, it seemed like BitDefender couldn't detect simple things like real-time protection!

Scary.

Here's an additional bit of info...

From what I posted above I figued that vsserv is crashing due to some problem with the update so I disabled automatic updates and guess what? No problems! But of course we need to updte now and then so I get up this morning and hit "Update Now" to do the manual update. The update downloads fine, installs then vsserv.exe crashes just as I mentioned above. But this time for some reason (perhaps because the auto update is off?) vsserv.exe doesnt hang and use up CPU. It did crash but then went back to normal again.

Just a guess here....but maybe when BD updates it retarts the service and Vista thinks thats a crash.

Hello

See my explanation here.

Thanks Niels. Yes, it's as i Guessed. But there is still the problem that if I let it auto update then one of the services seems to hang and eat CPU.

Hello Marlz

What process or service is eating lots of resources?

upgrepl.exe but it now seems to go away after a minutes or so.

So right now things seem ok with manually updating. But when i let it auto update theres still problems.

Hello Marlz

The support team is aware of the problem normally the problem should be fixed in one of the next updates. But if you still experience the same issues contact support again. It is normal behaviour that upgrepl.exe will use a few secons 100%.

Best regards
Niels
