If the protection isn't working, there should be a red X sign on the activity bar. But I think you should have uninstalled the old version before installing BD 2008. There's an easy way to test your real time protection - that is with the EICAR test file.
Go to this site:
http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htmScroll down and click on the link that says eicar.com. If your protection is working, then the file will be detected as soon as you save it to the hard disk, and if you have HTTP scan enabled, it will stop it before you've downloaded it.
Greetings, thanks for the info to all responders. The red X never showed up in the little window, but I'm still certain that it is not scanning. When I open my email client, or start programs, it always did a bunch of scanning, and always indicated acanning in the file zone bar. Now everything opens fast, (no thrashing while it scans), no indication of any files having been scanned in the statistics section either. (I forgot how fast this maching is without any anti-virus running) I've used the BD uninstall utility, and then reinstalled, with no fix. I did it again logged in as administrator, no fix. Support seems to be overwhelmed and I'm out here with my pants down because I can't safely use this machine, so I reinstalled v10 and it is working ok. I'll try again at a later date, and I'll be sure to check that all the BD services are running.
I think that the important thing is that BD is aware that this thing can appear to be running ok but still have a problem.
Thanks again
