I have just upgraded from Antivirus Plus v10 (XP Pro 32 bit) and find that on most occasions WINDOWS will not shut down.

It Logs off, Settings are saved, then it just hangs on 'Windows is shutting down' All I can then do is physically switch the PC off with the hardware button. Is anyone else experiencing this bug in an otherwise fine product?

Hello GeorgeP

Did you saw a message from windows that a BitDefender part hung? You must know that there happens a lot more in the shutdown procedure windows must close processes, services but also rebuild the memory, clear the page file, .... so it isn't easy to say that BitDefender is the cause. Only when you saw a windows message. To lower the shutdown time you download this service

Thanks for the reply Niels,

Firstly, until BD Internet Security 2008 was installed the PC was shutting down correctly. Now it goes through the motions as if it is about to Shut Down, no message appears from Windows, it just hangs on the last screen . The usual Windows text appears "Windows is shutting down..." and then it just hangs there. No error message is ever displayed, just a hang on the final screen.

Hello GeorgeP

To see if there aren't any errors logged please do this: go to start, run (if you can't find run press win+r (windows button together with the r-button) type eventvwr press enter open the logbooks system and application and take a look if you can find errors reported when you have shut down your pc.

Thanks for your assistance Niels. I have uploaded two screen shots errors from the Eventvwr (system). No other application is recorded as an error. To me this info is meaningless unfortunately. I have found that in uninstalling BD the PC shuts down no problem> When I re install BD (and I've tried both Internet Sec 2008 and Antivirus 2008) the shutdown issue reoccurs. I've installed and reinstalled a number of times the same scenario repeats.

(PS I have also used the 'User profile Hive Cleaner' from Microsoft, with no success)

any further help is always appreciated,
thanks, George

Hello GeorgeP

The errors aren't related to BitDefender. Do you have an nvidia based graphic card? To see if you have such graphic card do this: start, run, type dxdiag press enter go to the monitor/screen/display you will find the information after manufacturer. If so go to start, run, type services.msc press enter and search for the Nvidia Driver Helper Service if you find it double click on it press on stop and choose by start up type for disabled press on apply. Try this open BitDefender and disable the realtime protection before you shutdown windows. Let met know the result.

Niels, once again I appreciate your continueing efforts to provide assistance. Firstly, we have an ASUS X700 graphic card.

Second, and more interesting is your suggestion re 'disabling the realtime protection' before shutting down Windows. I have been doing this as a trial an error for a couple of days now and the PC shuts down. Mind you, the ShutDown problem was happening often, but NOT always, so I can't be certain this is the problem. I will continue the disabling prior shutdown for a few more days to confirm this one way or the other.

If this is the specific problem area, I will then need assistance in resolving it. I shall report in a few days.

Thank you again, George

Hello GeorgeP

That is the problem with shutdown problems they could have different causes. And that every time so sometimes BitDefender could be the cause and the other times another program.

Hello Niels,

Re my problem with Windows not Shutting Down after BD Internet Security 2008 was installed has been narrowed down to the Realtime Shield, as suggested by you a few days earlier.

I have been unticking the Realtime shield before ShutDown each time now and the PC shutsdown correctly. When attempting a shutdown without unclicking the Shield, it hangs permanently. Therefore having come to this confirmation of the problem, what can be done to resolve it?

I'm having exactly the same problem, even with Bitdefender 2008 (regular, as well as with IS 2008). I was thankful
to have found this thread as it at least provides a workaround.
I have a small home-network under XP SP2, with a FritzBox as Router.
My PC as well saves its settings but hangs on the shutdown screen, thus no events are reported, and it does
not power down. Network card LED remains orange btw (indicatint some traffic), even after having powered down
manually.
Disabling realtime shield lets the PC power down completely. Network LED gets green.

Hello marcus148

The shutdown problem seems to occur only on certain computer configurations but not on all.
You can take also a look here.

Many thanks for the input, Niels. It may happen on certain configurations only,
but if it does, it's quite an annoyance. During my search on the internet I
found a number of other people experiencing this problem with BD as well
(apparently without finding a proper solution), so I don't feel you ran into
two exceptional cases here.

I was aware of the aumha site (as well as of four other sites helping to solve
powerdown issues) and had tried every single solution proposed there without
any success. Only shutting down the realtime scan shield actually helped.
So I think I have good reason to assume that BD's realtime shield somehow
doesn't let properly go when trying to shut down the computer.

I'm running a 3.2 Ghz Dual Core Dell, nVidia nForce4 Board, with two nVidia
video cards on SLI. Network is connected per Ethernet to a Fritz DSL Router.

Best regards
Marcus
