Each time I boot my system (Vista 64bits) I have the following event in the system windows log :

EventID = 7000
The BDSelfPr service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

I didn't find any file BDSelfPr on my disk.

Apart this event in the log, BitDefender seem to work fine.

I dont know what if the goal of BDSelfPr. I need some help.

Hello djallaud

The goal of this driver is prevention of disabling BitDefender realtime protection via task manager.
I recommend that you do this press on win+r (windows button together with r) type devmgmt.msc press enter.
Go to view (display), click on show/display hidden devices. Now you will see an entry that is now visible which is called non plug and play compatible devices. Normally you must find an entry that is called BDSelfPr double click on it the device should be enabled and there shouldn't be any errors being displayed now press on the device tab current status should be started and start up type should be set on demand.

Best regards
Niels

Thanks for your answer Niels,

I followed your instructions and I found a folder "Non-Plug and Plays Devices" in the Device Manager. There is a bdftdif entry in this folder (among a lot of entries not related to BD) but no BDSelfPr entry (IMG:http://forum.bitdefender.com/style_emoticons/default/angry.gif)

As I wrote in my previous message a made a windows search on my disks and I did not found any file "BDSelfPr". It look like if it was missing (IMG:http://forum.bitdefender.com/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Maybe is it a concerne related to Vista 64 ?

Anyway, from what you are saying about the goal of this service I understand it is not a mandatory component to have BD doing its job. I am right ?

Thanks
David

Hello djallaud

Download the attachment which includes the BitDefender Self protection service. You have to extract it to the default installation folder. Which is BitDefender 2008.

It can be handy for protection when an infection tries to kill the BitDefender processes.

Best regards
Niels

Thanks for the file Neils.

It was really a paine to copy this file to BitDefender folder : Vista 64 just did not allowed me to do it (IMG:http://forum.bitdefender.com/style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) And yes, I have an Administrator account of course. I tried everything : taking ownership of the folder, disabling UAC y even tried to change the extension of the file to "zzz" (Vista allowed me to copy the file, but I could not rename it to ".sys" once it was it BD folder (IMG:http://forum.bitdefender.com/style_emoticons/default/angry.gif) ).

Finaly I had to use a dual boot : from my other boot partition I was allowed to copy the file (IMG:http://forum.bitdefender.com/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) .

But, I now have a new error : (IMG:http://forum.bitdefender.com/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

\??\F:\BitDefender\BitDefender 2008\bdselfpr.sys has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Please contact your software vendor for a compatible version of the driver.

EventID = 1060

Are you sure you gived me a 64bits driver ? I am on Vista 64bits with BD 64 bits.

Thanks again for your help

Hello djallaud

I am only a volunteer. Sorry but the driver I uploaded is a 32 bit driver. I can't install the 64 bit on my computer. What you can ask if someone else who is using a 64 bit version that that person installs it temporary and copy the driver and send it to you so you can place it. Did you used the BitDefender uninstall tool? Otherwise you must try it.

Best regards
Niels

Hi Djallaud,

Did you ever manage to resolve this issue? I ask as I have the same problem.

I am suspicious now that my issue is related to a conflict between BitDefender and Norton Ghost12. I believe this as the uninstall and install tools interfere with one another in their modification of common services. Are you running Ghost as well?

Hmmmm.
This seems to be a 64bit issue.
I wonder if they cannot get it to work in 64 bit?

I do not get errors, but in device manager I do see the yellow (!) exclamation for this.

When I install on my 32 bit os (both xp), the BDSelfPr.sys file is fine.

I guess I should be glad that I am not getting any bootup errors.

I have the same problem.
I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
I just installed BitDefender 2009, trial version.
I had the message that the file was missing.
I downloaded the attachment and after a lot of effort copied to the BitDefender folder.
The message changed from unable to find the file to the file being blocked.
Now I see that the driver I downloaded from this thread was a 32 bit driver.

I have the same issue. I kept hearing a chime sound and could not understand what was causing it. According to Event Viewer its the "BDSelfPr failed to start" error.

Am using WinXP 64bits.

I am pretty shocked over the age of this problem. If this is not addressed til my subscription runs out (74 days), I will not be using BitDefender again, that's for sure!

PS
The support is REALLY bad. If I hit support I have to go through this awful website, and id the "issue" selection does not have my problem what am i to do? There is no "general help" or "other" selection!

I have the same issue, Home Premium 64 bit, seems Bitdefender support is not too concerned with the issue. Sent them the error and have not heard back. Researched anti-virus products and this one came up consistently number 1 or 2 in all lists, not so sure I agree. Support sucks, their scanning engine miss-identified 5 files from Power DVD and flagged them as infected which rendered Power DVD uselesss to play blu-ray disks. I had to unistall the program, install again from CD from Dell, turn off real-time scanning, then had to exclude them from scanning, what a pain. Their updater kept hanging and would not let me have access to the console, sent that report in, have not heard back, finally after re-booting a few times the thing started working I guess.

Knowledge base?????? What knowledge

Unfortunatley, I just bought the product but may have to dump it, luckily only paid $20. nuff said

Get the aforementiond problem fixed it has been hanging on these boards from Oct. 2007, that is over a year SUPPORT.

Did not mean to quote, I hit the reply button, but it quoted the message anyway

I have also had this problem. The BDSELFPR service is not used in 64 bit Vista, Bitdefender left a reference to it in the program by accident. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future version. UNTIL then you can disable Vista's attempt to start the service and therefore element the error in event view. BTW don't even bother trying to delete the service Bitdefender just recreates it....

- Boot into safe mode

- Set the start value of the following keys to 4.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet\Services\BDSelfPr

NOTE: set the start value to 4 on ALL the ControlSet branches...

yours may be called ControlSet001, 002 etc etc...
